The NAA recognizes we are at the crossroads of a critical moment for the American Latino community and our nation. Now is the time for our community to build upon the progress we have made and reverse the damage caused by negative rhetoric targeted toward American Latinos. It is a crucial time for us as individuals, community leaders and institutions to not only stand collectively and be counted, but to lead, and thus bend the arc of history.
We aim to change the tone and tenor of the national discourse concerning American Latinos. The purpose of the American Latino National Summit is twofold: first, to define to the nation who we are as American Latinos by elucidating where we stand and what our contributions are to our country in terms of economic capital, human capital and political capital; and second, to articulate cohesive positions on the major issues of our times as they relate to the American Latino community and our nation, with an overarching emphasis on the economic case for Latino advancement, including education, immigration, wealth building, and American Latino leadership across sectors. We will gather the most prominent, respected and eloquent Latino and other leaders to present our case, and we will extend an invitation to the 2012 Presidential candidates. We seek to institutionalize a platform and a brand to be built over ongoing biennial Summits to take place on presidential and midterm congressional election years. Participation in this event is by invitation-only.
